Structural Characteristics of Tricone Drill Bits: Reliability Design from Cutting Teeth, Bearings to Sealing System

The overall performance of a tricone drill bit does not depend on a single component. It is the combined result of cutting teeth, bearings, lubrication, sealing and locking structures. Targeting high wear resistance, high penetration rate and high reliability, tricone bits adopt a mature and complete technical system in structural design.
1. Cutting Teeth Design: Balancing Wear Resistance and Rock Cutting Performance
The inserted tricone bit uses high-strength and high-toughness tungsten carbide teeth. By optimizing the number of tooth rows, tooth layout, tooth exposure height and carbide tooth profile, it balances wear resistance and rock breaking efficiency. For steel tooth bits, new wear-resistant material is hard-faced on the tooth surface. It maintains high penetration rate while extending the service life of cutting teeth. These two designs serve different formation conditions, with the core goal to extend effective working time of the bit.
2. Floating Bearing & High-temperature Lubrication: Reduce Frictional Temperature Rise
The tricone bit adopts floating bearing structure. The floating elements are made of high-strength, high-elastic, high-temperature and wear-resistant materials with solid lubricant surface treatment. Matched with special anti-wear grease resistant up to 250°C, it reduces the relative linear speed of bearing pairs and suppresses heat generated by friction. For drilling operations with high weight-on-bit and high rotary speed, this design greatly improves bearing service life and operational stability.
3. High-precision Metal Seal: Coordination of Dynamic & Static Seals
The sealing system is critical for bearing reliability. Tricone bits are equipped with high-precision metal sealing assembly: a set of precisely machined metal seal rings act as axial dynamic seals for bearings, while two high-elastic rubber energy rings are placed at the sealing area of cone and leg as static seals. By precisely controlling seal compression, the contact surfaces of metal rings keep tight contact continuously, which greatly improves sealing stability.
4. Oil Reservoir & Ball Locking: Lubrication Guarantee for High RPM Operation
The full-rubber oil reservoir is designed to balance pressure difference and prevent drilling mud from entering the lubrication circuit, providing continuous lubrication for bearings. The cones are fixed by steel ball locking structure, suitable for high-speed drilling. The oil reservoir, grease, sealing components and bearing system work together to reduce risks of contaminant ingress and lubrication failure.
5. Drilling Benefits Brought by Integrated Structure
From optimized cutting teeth and floating bearings, to metal seals and full-rubber oil reservoirs, the whole structural design focuses on three priorities: longer cutting tooth life, higher bearing reliability and stable lubrication system. Superior structural design enables consistent performance in oil & gas exploitation and geological exploration, delivering reliable rock-breaking solutions for drilling projects.
